Throughout civilization’s history, humankind has had a enormous impact on the environment. As things are built to make life better for people, most of the time, it would have a corresponding negative effect on the environment. Industries, for example, get rid of their waste carelessly and irresponsibly into the soil which may then contaminate it. Once the soil is contaminated, it can become unfit for many beneficial uses like growing plants that can serve to capture CO2 in the atmosphere. The water quality in the area where the waste was dumped would then be unfit for human utilization and other agricultural uses. This is when the method called water remediation comes into play.

This method eliminates contaminants from the water supply, making it suitable again for various uses. This also intends to make sure that the residue freed from the water is also disposed of responsibly and carefully. There are several methods that are utilized to handle water contamination and to revert water to its usable shape. There are solutions that are now available to significantly improve the quality of water while producing other benefits.

One big industry that is taking on many challenges when it comes to processing huge volumes of water contaminated with salt and other minerals is the coal seam gas industry. Coal seam gas creates vast amounts of waste water as a byproduct of gas extraction. The resultant water from the gas drilling process is typically contaminated with high levels of salt along with other substances. Traditionally, this contaminated water is gotten rid of through the process of evaporation. This method is not environmentally sustainable, however, if it involves very large volumes. The use of reverse osmosis for desalination is also employed to deal with polluted water. Not a lot of plant species grow well in soils contaminated with type of water so scientists have developed bio-fuel trees that mature up to 30% quicker and are stronger than any of their unmodified counterparts. They can also be adapted to perform optimally over an extensive range of soil conditions.

With many types of contaminants in water supplies the world over, water remediation becomes very vital in making polluted water fit again for human consumption.
