Being Eco Friendly While At Work Saves on Energy and Waste

A typical North American office

Choosing to be ‘green’  in the office may appear a daunting experience.  However, with today’s modern  thinking, the demands on us to be cleaner, greener and more efficient,  may be worth heeding. UK’s businesses are responsible for 40% of the UK carbon emissions, with 27% being generated from homes. It is clear that achieving  a more environmentally friendly office will create  a greater overall impact. One of the nicest things of  becoming greener is that even minor  changes can  make a difference.

A primary incentive for businesses to be ‘greener’; is the reduction in costs. A major factor  given the current  economic climate. Waste is a huge issue for businesses.  On average, nearly 75% of the thousands of tonnes of paper consumed during a  year goes straight into landfill together  with some 90% of the millions of tonnes of everyday  company  rubbish. This occurs even though much of what is thrown out is perfect for recycling.

Energy use within offices  is not managed correctly, with most businesses paying  vast  amounts of money every year for power and heat. UK businesses are shown to spend £6 billion per annum on their energy costs,  only to waste £1 billion of it because of  inferior  insulation. Proper investment in the best office insulation would produce  reduced energy bills.

These bills can be reduced further if low energy lamps and appliances be used. Powering non essential electrical equipment  such as PCs by leaving them on  standby is a waste of energy. Switching off PCs and monitors over night will have a considerable  impact.

think about  how much water is wasted by a dripping tap. Left unaddressed, this could lead to some 5000 litres of water per annum   literally being poured  down the drain.  Well maintained, current  plumbing and pipe work together  with water saving devices such as short flush cistern choices  can reduce this waste.

We are already prepared  to be green when  home, but consider being green from the office desk. It doesn’t  cost the Earth.
